Transient Voltage Suppressor

Transient Voltage Suppressors (Also known as TVS Diode) are a type of electronic components designed to protect sensitive electronics from high-voltage transients. They can respond to overvoltage events faster than most other types of circuit protection devices, with low leakage current, low clamping voltages and are offered in a variety of surface mount and through-hole circuit board mounting formats.

TVS Diodes can be classified into two types, one is Unidirectional, and the other is Bidirectional.

A unidirectional TVS Diode works as a rectifier in a circuit in the forward direction, and this unidirectional diode is made to withstand very large peak currents. A bidirectional TVS Diode can be represented by two mutually opposing avalanche diodes connected in series with each other. These diodes are connected in parallel with the device or circuit to be protected.

A key advantage of a TVS diode is its rapid response time (typically within nanoseconds) to electrical transients—diverting the energy of the transient safely to ground while maintaining a constant clamping voltage, high withstand capability, long life cycle, and low capacitance, making them ideal for protecting sensitive ICs with high speed interfaces.


TVS diode is normally used for diversion/clamping in low-energy circuits and systems, and for ESD protection. Applications of TVS Diode can be found in Automotive, Data and Signal lines, LED Lighting, Microprocessor and MOS memory, AC/DC power lines, Telecommunication equipment and Industrial control.

How does transient voltage suppressor work?

In a circuit, the TVS should be "invisible" until a transient appears. Electrical parameters such as breakdown voltage (VBR), standby (leakage) current (ID), and capacitance should have no effect on normal circuit performance. The TVS breakdown voltage is usually 10 % above the reverse standoff voltage (VR), which approximates the circuit operating voltage to limit standby current and to allow for variations in VBR caused by the temperature coefficient of the TVS. When a transient occurs, the TVS clamps instantly to limit the spike voltage to a safe level, called the clamping voltage (VC), while conducting potentially damaging current away from the protected component.
