Bidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor Selection for AC and Data Lines

A bidirectional TVS presents similar avalanche behavior for positive and negative transients. It is useful on AC-coupled, bipolar or reversible lines where a unidirectional device's forward conduction would interfere.

Engineering focusYINT provides bidirectional power TVS and low-capacitance ESD options for different energy and bandwidth requirements.

Build the Selection Around the Complete System

Bidirectional does not automatically mean suitable for high-speed data. Power TVS devices can have too much capacitance, while ESD arrays are optimized for signal integrity but handle less energy.

Select voltage from the full positive and negative normal swing, then choose package and capacitance from the interface bandwidth and transient source.

Design the Protection Path Before Choosing the Package

The design objective is to convert the application into measurable voltage, current, temperature, timing and layout limits. This prevents a search phrase from being mistaken for a complete specification.

From Search Term to a Qualified Protection Specification

For bidirectional transient voltage suppressor, The review becomes clearer when requirements are separated into operating limits, event definition, circuit coordination and qualification evidence.

  1. Set the no-trip boundary. Include common-mode and differential signal limits. Translate the application into voltage, current, temperature and timing limits that an engineer can verify on the final assembly.
  2. Add temperature and timing. Check capacitance per channel. Add cold and hot limits plus event frequency; these factors often decide whether a catalog value still applies in the enclosure.
  3. Review placement and coordination. Compare clamp voltage in both polarities. Place the first protection action close to the entry point, keep the return path short and confirm that coordinated stages do not interfere with normal function.
  4. Freeze the qualified condition. Use a primary stage for exposed long cables when needed. Repeat the worst cases on production-representative boards and retain plots or logs that another engineer can reproduce.

Once recorded, the same framework can be reused for samples, corner testing and production change control.

Where Otherwise Good Protection Designs Fail

Replacing a unidirectional A-suffix part with a CA-suffix part without reviewing the circuit can change low-voltage clamping behavior.

A candidate part should remain provisional until the latest controlled datasheet and the complete operating envelope have been reviewed.

YINT Models Matched to the Required Protection Role

These models are relevant starting points, not universal substitutes. Their electrical zones and limits must remain distinct.

YINT modelVerified rating or featureRecommended role in this design
SMBJ5.0CA5 V bidirectional TVS, 600 W peak pulse power and 9.2 V maximum clamping voltage at rated current600 W bidirectional clamp for a suitable 5 V power or control node
ESD24VAPB24 V bidirectional, two channels, 10 A at 8/20 µs and AEC-Q101 qualifiedBidirectional two-channel protection for compatible 24 V interfaces
ESDLC5V0D3B5 V bidirectional, two-channel ESD device with 350 W peak pulse capabilityTwo-channel bidirectional protection for 5 V data interfaces

For BOM control, retain the exact suffix, polarity, package and datasheet revision. The sourcing review should also confirm this application requirement: Use a primary stage for exposed long cables when needed.

Confirm Protection without Hiding Functional Failures

Test both polarities, signal integrity and leakage across temperature. For data lines, verify eye opening or packet error under normal operation after ESD stress.

Record the exact YINT part number, PCB revision, test waveform, temperature and pass criteria so purchasing changes do not silently alter the qualified design.

FAQ

1.What makes bidirectional transient voltage suppressor application-specific?

Bidirectional does not automatically mean suitable for high-speed data. Power TVS devices can have too much capacitance, while ESD arrays are optimized for signal integrity but handle less energy.

2.How do the YINT models in the table differ?

SMBJ5.0CA, ESD24VAPB, ESDLC5V0D3B occupy different voltage, energy, current or signal-integrity roles. The table identifies the intended starting point for each.

3.Why is nominal voltage not enough?

Tolerance, startup, signal swing, regeneration and temperature can move the real maximum. Selection must also leave margin between the protected-node stress and its absolute limit.

4.What is the final acceptance test?

Use the specified event on a production-representative assembly and verify both protection performance and normal operation against written numerical limits.
