AC Resettable Fuse Use on Low Voltage Alternating Current Circuits
A PPTC can operate on some low-voltage AC branches because heating depends on RMS current, but its voltage and interruption limits still apply to the peak waveform and fault source.
Start with the Disturbance and the Current Return Path
It must not be assumed suitable for mains merely because current is low. Power-frequency follow current, overvoltage, certification and fire containment require a complete safety review.
For an isolated low-voltage AC output, compare peak voltage with Vmax, RMS load with derated hold current and source fault current with Imax.
Turn the Application Requirement into Electrical Limits
Protection performance depends on the full operating and fault envelope, not on a category name. The next review steps connect the electrical requirement to the final qualification test.
A Design-Review Path from Requirements to Release
For AC resettable fuse, Move from the load outward: establish its normal range, quantify the source, examine every protection stage and finish with reproducible acceptance criteria.
- Establish the normal envelope. Convert RMS voltage to worst-case peak plus tolerance. Write a measurable requirement before comparing packages, including the maximum continuous condition and the minimum condition that must trigger protection.
- Describe the source and waveform. Confirm the circuit is isolated low voltage. Define the source capability and event duration so pulse power, trip time or thermal rise is evaluated against the correct condition.
- Check system interaction. Check transformer short-circuit current. Place the first protection action close to the entry point, keep the return path short and confirm that coordinated stages do not interfere with normal function.
- Freeze the qualified condition. Verify required safety approvals. Test samples at electrical and thermal corners, then make the measured acceptance limits part of sourcing and change control.
The result is a traceable requirement that can survive a board revision, supplier review or later failure analysis.
Why a Plausible Part Number Can Still Be Wrong
Using a 33 V PPTC directly on 120 or 230 VAC is outside the device rating and unsafe.
A candidate part should remain provisional until the latest controlled datasheet and the complete operating envelope have been reviewed.
YINT Models Matched to the Required Protection Role
These models are relevant starting points, not universal substitutes. Their electrical zones and limits must remain distinct.
| YINT model | Verified rating or feature | Recommended role in this design |
|---|---|---|
| SMD2920-100-33V | 1.1 A hold current, 2.2 A trip current, 33 V maximum and 100 A maximum fault current | Isolated low-voltage AC secondary within 33 V and 100 A limits |
| SMD2920-260-16V | 2.6 A hold current, 5.2 A trip current, 16 V maximum and 100 A maximum fault current | Lower-voltage AC secondary requiring higher hold current |
| 20D331K | 210 VAC / 275 VDC, 6.5 kA maximum surge current and 153 J energy rating | Separate transient suppression on a compatible AC input |
For BOM control, retain the exact suffix, polarity, package and datasheet revision. The sourcing review should also confirm this application requirement: Verify required safety approvals.
Prove the Design at Electrical and Temperature Limits
Test the actual transformer or converter under overload and short circuit at temperature limits. Confirm recovery, dielectric performance and enclosure temperature.
Record the exact YINT part number, PCB revision, test waveform, temperature and pass criteria so purchasing changes do not silently alter the qualified design.
FAQ
1.What makes AC resettable fuse application-specific?
It must not be assumed suitable for mains merely because current is low. Power-frequency follow current, overvoltage, certification and fire containment require a complete safety review.
2.How do the YINT models in the table differ?
SMD2920-100-33V, SMD2920-260-16V, 20D331K occupy different voltage, energy, current or signal-integrity roles. The table identifies the intended starting point for each.
3.Why is nominal voltage not enough?
Tolerance, startup, signal swing, regeneration and temperature can move the real maximum. Selection must also leave margin between the protected-node stress and its absolute limit.
4.What is the final acceptance test?
Use the specified event on a production-representative assembly and verify both protection performance and normal operation against written numerical limits.
