YINT Electronics Application Guide

Coil Suppression Diode Selection for Relays Contactors and Solenoids

Relay, contactor and solenoid coils store magnetic energy during operation. At turn-off, that energy must flow somewhere; without a defined path, the driver absorbs it through avalanche or parasitic arcing.

Engineering focusYINT TVS families allow the designer to choose a controlled clamp level instead of relying on uncontrolled transistor avalanche.

Start with the Disturbance and the Current Return Path

The suppression method changes mechanical behavior. A low-voltage flyback path extends dropout time, while a TVS raises the clamp voltage and shortens current decay. Contact bounce and safety timing may therefore change.

Match the suppressor to coil current, inductance and duty cycle, and keep the clamping path physically close to the coil connection. If the cable is long, test both ends because harness inductance adds overshoot.

Turn the Application Requirement into Electrical Limits

The design objective is to convert the application into measurable voltage, current, temperature, timing and layout limits. This prevents a search phrase from being mistaken for a complete specification.

A Design-Review Path from Requirements to Release

For coil suppression diode, Move from the load outward: establish its normal range, quantify the source, examine every protection stage and finish with reproducible acceptance criteria.

  1. Capture real operating limits. Calculate or measure stored coil energy at maximum current. Use worst-case values rather than the nominal label, including tolerance, startup, load-step and ambient-temperature effects.
  2. Bound the abnormal event. Reserve voltage margin below the transistor absolute maximum. Define the source capability and event duration so pulse power, trip time or thermal rise is evaluated against the correct condition.
  3. Verify the assembled circuit. Check whether fast dropout is required by the mechanism. Check margin at the protected IC or load rather than only at the protector terminals, where parasitic inductance can hide a damaging residual peak.
  4. Freeze the qualified condition. Verify repetitive pulse heating at the maximum switching rate. Repeat the worst cases on production-representative boards and retain plots or logs that another engineer can reproduce.

The result is a traceable requirement that can survive a board revision, supplier review or later failure analysis.

Why a Plausible Part Number Can Still Be Wrong

A device selected only by supply voltage may survive normal operation but fail after repetitive high-temperature switching.

A candidate part should remain provisional until the latest controlled datasheet and the complete operating envelope have been reviewed.

YINT Models Matched to the Required Protection Role

These models are relevant starting points, not universal substitutes. Their electrical zones and limits must remain distinct.

YINT modelVerified rating or featureRecommended role in this design
SMCJ24A-H24 V unidirectional TVS, 1,500 W peak pulse power, AEC-Q101 qualifiedHigh-energy 24 V-class coil clamp after tolerance review
SMBJ5.0CA5 V bidirectional TVS, 600 W peak pulse power and 9.2 V maximum clamping voltage at rated currentBidirectional suppression on compatible low-voltage AC or reversible nodes
SMD2920-260-16V2.6 A hold current, 5.2 A trip current, 16 V maximum and 100 A maximum fault currentOvercurrent limiting on a separate low-voltage coil branch below 16 V

For BOM control, retain the exact suffix, polarity, package and datasheet revision. The sourcing review should also confirm this application requirement: Calculate or measure stored coil energy at maximum current.

Prove the Design at Electrical and Temperature Limits

Record voltage and current during release at cold and hot conditions. Confirm dropout time, EMI and suppressor temperature with the production harness and driver.

Record the exact YINT part number, PCB revision, test waveform, temperature and pass criteria so purchasing changes do not silently alter the qualified design.

FAQ

1.What problem does coil suppression diode solve?

The suppression method changes mechanical behavior. A low-voltage flyback path extends dropout time, while a TVS raises the clamp voltage and shortens current decay. Contact bounce and safety timing may therefore change.

2.Which YINT parts are relevant to this design?

The starting candidates are SMCJ24A-H, SMBJ5.0CA, SMD2920-260-16V. They perform different functions, so the final choice must follow the voltage, current, waveform, package and layout checks described above.

3.What is the most common selection mistake?

Using a nominal rating as the complete answer. Temperature, tolerance, event duration, source impedance and the protected device's actual limit can all change the decision.

4.How should the finished design be qualified?

Test the assembled board at operating and fault corners, record the critical waveform, and compare the result with a numerical pass limit before freezing the BOM.
